Weinspirits' insider tip: Wines from the Burgunderhof Merkel

Weinspirits' Geheimtipp: Weine vom Burgunderhof Merkel | Weinspirits

Some time ago, Carmen Merkel sent us a few wines from the Burgunderhof Merkel winery in Gundersheim in the beautiful Rhineland-Palatinate. We would like to say a big thank you to the Merkel family again!

Without anticipating too much, after the tasting we can say that most of the wines were real value for money!

So, let's begin:

1. Sauvignon Blanc

Let's start with a white wine, the Sauvignon Blanc. This fully fruity, but at the same time light Sauvignon Blanc convinces with distinctive aromas of gooseberries, apples and herbs. For me personally, it even had slight aromas of lemongrass. A fresh, full-bodied wine with a very nice finish that is the perfect accompaniment to any type of fish and seafood. In this price range (7.90€) it is at the forefront.

2. Pinot Noir

We continue with a Pinot Noir. For a Pinot Noir, this example is very complex and harmonious. The yin and yang among the Pinot Noirs, so to speak. Even if I have to admit that Pinot Noir is definitely not one of my favorite grape varieties, this one is a real treat. Mermeladig, berry, complex and full-bodied, very nice! For €10.90 you get the perfect accompaniment to game or a cheese platter!

3. GLUT

Our next title contender is a Cuvée from Merlot, Cabernet Mitos, Portugieser, Regent, Dornfelder. Among the reds, this wine is the clear price-performance winner of those tested. For just €8.90 you get pure character, density, fullness and complexity. Nice taste of wild berries, raspberries, blackberries and a wood note on the palate due to the four-month aging in barriques. A real highlight with dark meat or in the evening!

4. Brilliant

Our fourth candidate is a Pinot Blanc cuvée made from Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, which probably owes its name to its bright, brilliant colour. For me, this wine is the epitome of spring. Quince, herb meadow, apple and slightly nutty (possibly almond?). For €8.90 you not only get a worthy accompaniment to seafood, veal or pork, but also a really good mood!

5. Myth

The best comes last! This Cabernet Mitos is undoubtedly one of the best red wines I've ever tasted. Full bouquet of forest berry jam, black cherries, vanilla and a hint of black pepper. There are also strong and spicy wood tones from the barrique. The most characterful and multi-layered complex wine in this list! At €14.90, it is also the most expensive and technically inferior to the GLUT in terms of price-performance ratio, but it is undoubtedly a very good investment for special occasions!
