1. Zuccardi Valle de Uco, Argentina
This winery is located at the foot of the Andes. Alberto Zuccardi planted the first vines in 1963 in Maipú, since then the Argentine winery has grown steadily and now it belongs to the elite of Argentine viticulture. "Our wines are wines of the sun, but also of the soil," said Sebastian Zuccardi of the "Washington Post". He is the third generation to work in the family winery. Why should you visit the estate? Great guided tours and tastings are offered to immerse yourself in the realm of Argentine wine, followed by seasonal cuisine accompanied by excellent wine at the Piedra Infinita Cocina restaurant.
2. Bodega Garzon, Uruguay
The Bodega Garzón winery located in the Maldonanda region on the coast of Uruguay. It is known for its sustainable way of working. Wind and photovoltaic energy, among other things, are used on the winery. Why should you visit it? It is ideal for a short trip through the culinary world of South America. Not only good wine, but also cooking courses over the open fire are offered!
3. Domain Wachau, Austria
Our Austrian colleagues were voted the best winery in Europe 2020 with the Domäne Wachau winery, moving up to third place worldwide. "It's about what makes the Wachau so special and about communicating this to our visitors accordingly. It's about the unique landscape, the steep terraces, the manual and sustainable work of our winegrowing families in the vineyards, and it's about a strong team effort." , says winery manager Roman Horvarth about the award on the winery's online site. Anyone who has never been to the Wachau should definitely do so.Wonderful vineyards, wineries and, apart from the Corona period, great festivals for the wine harvest!
4 The Hess Collection Winery, California
Donald Hess' CV is probably exceptional. Born in Bern in 1936, he later trained as a master brewer in Munich and, after the early death of his father, took over the family brewery Steinholzi in Bern at the age of twenty. In 1961, Hess founded Valser Mineralquellen AG, which was also number 1 in Switzerland before it was sold to Coca Cola.
Donald Hess has been investing the proceeds from his business for several decades in his two great passions: wine and art. Today, the reserved Swiss man owns the Hess Collection Winery in Napa Valley, the Glen Carlou Vineyards in South Africa, Peter Lehmann Wines in Australia and the Bodega Colomé in Argentina.
California is not least known for strong and characterful wine. A visit is at least as worthwhile due to the unbelievable diversity in terms of nature and landscape. As a wine lover, the West Coast in the USA is always worth a visit!
5. Montes, Chile
The Montes winery was founded in the 80s and can undoubtedly count itself among the best South American wineries. We at Weinspirits definitely want to visit it ourselves. After tasting some wines which were highly recommended we will visit the winery next year! "We are known for aging our wines to the powerful, ancient sounds of Gregorian chants. This method was developed by our excellent winemakers - and makes us unique," can be read on the Instagram page of the winery.Bonus: This winery is top-notch in culinary terms
6 Château Smith Haut Lafitte, France
It's a name you probably hear more often. Lafitte. The Château Smith Haut Lafitte is located in Martillac south of Bordeaux and is one of the oldest wineries in France. The first vines of the winery were already cultivated in the 14th century. Since 1991 the winery has been owned by the Florence and Daniel Cathiard family. Since then, the winery has been on the up and up again. The Bordeaux-based wines of the château are all slightly more expensive, but they are worth it. If you want to take a trip through Bordeaux and get to know the wonderful and old world of French wine, you should definitely make a detour here!
7. Marques de Riscal, Spain
The Rioja is probably the best-known wine-growing region in Spain and hardly any other Spanish wine-growing region is as common on local wine shelves as this one. This winery in Rioja is an absolute tourist attraction because it has an architectural highlight of its own, which makes the place an absolute hotspot. The building was designed by the well-known architect designer Frank Gehry. The winery contains a typical Rioja with a strong character, which should also be affordable for everyone. We highly recommend a visit.
8. Cantina Montonale, Italy
Our journey continues in Italy.More specifically in the Lugana region Italy has great wine regions, from Tuscany to Sicily to Lake Garda. Lugana is known as "the favorite wine of Lake Garda". We have chosen a winery that not only offers excellent Lugana, but also a great ambience and attitude to life. Cantina Montonale not only offers numerous guided tours, but also performances and courses. Let yourself be enchanted by the region of Italy and pay a visit to the winery!
8. Quinta do Crasto, Portugal
We are in Portugal with the deserved eighth place: namely at the Quinta do Crastro winery. Portugal has a lot to offer for wine lovers and not only the Vinho Verde, for which it has become particularly well known in recent years. We chose this winery because it combines family tradition with high quality wines. The winery has everything that the Portuguese wine world stands for, including fantastic port wine. Port wine in particular has experienced a great upswing again in recent years! Service, wine in the premium segment and ambience par excellence.
9 Winery Dr. Loosen, Germany
This German winery from Bernkastel-Kues is a VDP member and has been family-owned for 200 years. It is managed by Ernst F. Loosen. "With the legacy of his ancestors - ungrafted, old vines in historic large sites of the Middle Moselle - he found exactly the material he needed to produce independent, complex wines of world class ." writes the winery itself on the website. And that describes it very well. The winery stands for great wines, beautiful vineyards and German family tradition. We recommend visiting the winery yourself, but we can also recommend a "blind purchase" in the wine shop or on the Internet.
10. Antinori nel Chianti Classico, Italy
Last but not least, we are back in Italy. That Italy is known for its Chianti and that it is a great wine region should be known to most. We could list hundreds of wineries where you can get amazing Chianti. However, we chose this one, namely Antinori nel Chianti Classico, because it resembles an architectural masterpiece, as you can see in the Instagram post. There is also an underground wine cellar for guests to look at, which looks absolutely impressive, although the cantina and museum are initially integrated quite unobtrusively. The winery itself is a total work of art and everyone who is vacationing in this region should plan to pay it a visit!
We can draw a small conclusion from wine spirits:
Even if it was the top 10 for us, there are countless wineries worldwide that more than deserve a visit. Wine has always been known to bring cultures and people together. Travel and visit as many places as you can, and pop into wineries if you enjoy a pint or two. If you need the perfect outfit for a visit or two, you can find the here.
